In October 1921 a partnership was formed between Frank Grundy and Lawrence Svenson (company originally known as Grundy & Svenson) for the purpose of manufacturing patterns of wood and metal, to meet the needs of various industries. The first place of business was in a small shop located in the Olney section of Philadelphia, PA. In 1925 ground was broken nearby for a new "more modern", larger one story facility. Frederick Wohlgemuth began his apprenticeship with Grundy & Svenson in 1939, at age 17. Later in 1946, Fred Wohlgemuth and another employee, Charles Burns, acquired the Grundy & Svenson business, renamed it "Burns & Wohlgemuth", and remained at the same location on Front Street & Olney Avenue in Philadelphia. In 1971, with the retirement of Mr. Burns, Fred Wohlgemuth became the sole proprietor of the company. Anticipating the diminishing demand in the patternmaking field, Mr. Wohlgemuth expanded the business to include commerical and custom furniture, store fixtures and displays; while maintaining a high level of expertise in wood tooling. In 1982 Burns & Wohlgemuth incorporated in Pennsylvania under "Frederick G. Wohlgemuth", trading as Burns & Wohlgemuth. George Wohlgemuth, son of the founder, was named President. On April 1, 1989 Burns & Wohlgemuth relocated to its present location in Bensalem, PA; in a new custom built fully equipped modern office and production facility. Today, Burns & Wohlgemuth has grown from a two person pattern shop to 35+ craftsmen in a 90,000 s.f. facility. The company has branched out to diversify its product offering with expertise in all areas of wood, glass, laminate, plastic, fiberglass and metal materials. In 1994 "B&W Woodcrafters" was created to serve a wide variety of customers concentrating in store fixturing, retail merchandising display units, carts and kiosks.
